Rowena Chowdrey and Steve Pisano made assured reading debuts, from their works-in-progress, A Pound OF Death (a thriller) and Life In The Fast Lane (an educational, football-related memoir). Dr Graham Deakin held the audience spellbound with the latest instalment of his micro-cultural, also football-related essays, There’s Only One.

Robert Cole gave us selected treats from his rightly praised collection of Poetry, London Poems. Jim Ring topped the bill with a fine reading from his much-admired novel, Queen’s Ransom. This was followed by a Q&A with Wet Zebra editor, Martin Baker.

The illustration is a kind of Rosencrantz & Gildenstern conceit. The main action isn’t in the wings, as it is in the play. The readers were the main event, and they all commanded the kind of rapt attention you see here. But that attention, focus, and excitement all tell the story of a memorable and exciting evening.
